WAXAHACHIE — The Waxahachie Lady Indians picked up their second District 11-6A victory Thursday evening in convincing fashion.
Waxahachie (5-10, 2-3 in 11-6A) jumped out to a 21-6 first-quarter lead and ran away with the 54-23 win against (3-9, 0-1) Waco Midway inside Michael Key Turner Gymnasium.
The Lady Indians previously defeated Waco High, 61-41, before falling to DeSoto (67-19), Mansfield Lake Ridge (47-42) and Cedar Hill (54-48). The latter two occurred in the past week. Thursday, however, showed quite an improvement in the Lady Indians’ focus, conditioning and potential.
Before the season, Waxahachie head girls’ basketball coach Ashlaa Zuniga told KBEC Sports that Midway would be the perfect measuring stick to start the district schedule.
Of course, that was before the game was rescheduled from pre-Christmas to Thursday. It was also before she knew Midway would have just one varsity player on its roster when the two teams met.
Both were the result of a COVID-19 outbreak within the Midway program. Outside of Mariah Dunn (5 points), the rest of the Lady Panthers’ roster was filled with junior varsity players.
Alas, the game must go on.
Behind Mya Williams’ 19 points, Waxahachie led 35-11 at the halftime break.
The Lady Indians then opened the second half on an 8-0 run for a 43-11 lead as the clock dipped under four minutes to play in the third quarter.
It was Midway, though, who closed the frame on an impressive 10-1 run to cut the Lady Indians’ lead to 44-21. Waxahachie had clearly made the conscious effort to “call off the dogs” and work on set plays in the halfcourt.
The 10-point third-quarter for the Lady Panthers was their biggest offensive output of the game. Waxahachie limited the visitors to six or fewer points in each of the first, second and fourth quarters.
Williams ultimately led the Lady Indians with a game-high 21 points. She also added five rebounds and two assists.
Bre’yunna Blakely posted a team-high seven rebounds and added four points, while Kyla McBride and Chadarian Miles each scored eight points. All 10 Lady Indians scored on the evening.
No player for Midway reached double-digit scoring.

The Waxahachie Lady Indians will continue their district slate against No. 1 (16-1, 3-1) Duncanville on Friday.
The game will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. inside the MKT in Waxahachie, with KBEC 1390AM/99.1FM going on-air at 7:25 p.m.
