WAXAHACHIE VOLLEYBALL STAYS UNBEATEN IN 11-6A WITH SWEEP OF CEDAR HILL

The Waxahachie Lady Indians continued their strong start to the abbreviated season Friday with a straight-set sweep of Cedar Hill.

Waxahachie set the tone early, winning the opening set in convincing fashion, 25-5. The Lady Indians then rolled off 25-11 and 25-15 victories in the second and third sets to complete the sweep.

The victory improved the Lady Indians to 8-1 on the season and 2-0 in District 11-6A. They have yet to drop a set in district action, having swept Waco High on Tuesday, 25-6, 25-10, 25-20.

“I think this team plays with a tremendous amount of heart and determination,” Waxahachie head volleyball coach Sandy Faussett-Stoops told KBEC Sports before the match. “We have shown steady improvement, especially since we have started playing against other opponents. We really have grown leaps and bounds over the past couple of weeks and that’s exciting to see that level of performance from them, especially in some tough matches.”

Kate Morgan recorded a team-high 18 kills with an impressive .667-hitting percentage and added three aces. The senior outside hitter currently leads the Lady Indians with 98 kills through 27 sets on the season.

Jh’Kyah Head and Emma Smithey each added eight and four kills, respectively. Maddie Fuller (12) and Taylor Cavazos (11) provided the assists from the setter position.

Morgan wasn’t the only Lady Indian to have a nice game behind the service line, either. Brooklyn Baskin recorded a team-best 16 points with four aces, while Avery Long had 14 points to go with her four aces.

Cavazos added two aces. The trio of Fuller, Long and Baskin each finished with six digs.

The Lady Indians return to action Tuesday at home against (4-3, 1-0) Waco Midway. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.

As Faussett-Stoops looks toward the remaining district slate, she pointed to three areas that the Lady Indians need to improve upon.

“We need to be able to run a quicker offense and we will need to stay consistent in our passing game in order to do that,” she explained. “We have been working very hard on blocking too, so those are all areas that I’d like to see improvement.”
